The subject is divided to the three thematic parts - the first part dealing with membrane processes, second with ion-exchange and sorption processes and the third one deals with the technologies for preparation of process waters. In the first part, electro-membrane processes (electro-dialysis, electro-deionization and capacitive deionization), pressure driven membrane processes (ultrafiltration, nanofiltration ande reverse-osmosis) and processes utilizing hydrophobic membranes (membrane distillation, membrane degassing) are discussed. Second part describes ion exchange, its selectivity and kinetics, synthesis of common types of ion exchangers, types of chelating resins, non-ionogeninc sorbents for organic compounds, types and preparation of inorganic sorbents and utilization of selective sorbents for purification of drinking water and industrial waste waters. In the third part, common technologies utilizing membranes (desalination) and ion exchangers (softening, deionization, demineralization) as well as their combinations are described including requirements for water pre-treatment and common pre-treatment technologies (clarification, sand filtration). Students will know characteristics of particular membrane and sorption technologies used in water treatment. They will familiarize with technologies used in production of drinking water by desalination of sea and brackish water - their advantages and disadvantages. They will be able to design suitable technology for selective removal of toxic ions and organic substances from contaminated drinking water and industrial waste waters. Integral part of the knowledge will be application of membrane and ion exchange technologies for production of demineralized water and their suitable combinations with respect to economy of the process.
