The subject of this course is introducing students to biotechnological methods of biogas production (mixture of methane and carbon dioxide) and methods of biomethane production treatment. Biogas is one of the renewable energy sources. The benefit of these technologies is that biogas is produced from biodegradable waste materials, possibly from purpose-grown plant biomass. Participants will be introduced to the basic principles of biogas formation, properties and possible applications. Furthermore, they will be introduced to the actual biogas production technology and the technological specifics of biogas plants for processing different types of substrates. For the further use of biogas, its treatment by removing undesirable components of biogas (sulphane, water vapour, etc.) is important. The subject also includes the issue of upgrading biogas to biomethane by removing carbon dioxide from biogas and its biological conversion to biomethane.
