Annotation -
The course introduces students to modern methods of analysis of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures using the effective chromatographic separation methods as well as spectrometric methods (UV / VIS, FTIR, MS, NMR). Students will be introduced with examples of analysis of real hydrocarbon fractions and products as well as samples of the contaminated environment.
Last update: Pospíšil Milan (08.11.2015)
Syllabus -

1. Introduction, comparison between standardized and non-standardized instrumental analytical methods to analyse multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures

2. Problems of qualitative and quantitative analysis of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures, the hydrocarbon matrix complexity influence on accuracy of the determination

3. Options for pre-separation and pre-concentration of samples to final analysis - an appropriate combination of separation procedures

4. Gas chromatography - instrumentation, columns, detectors

5. Gas Chromatography - examples of analysis, problem solving

6. High performance liquid chromatography - instrumentation, columns, detectors

7. High performance liquid chromatography - examples of analysis, troubleshooting

8. Other methods of liquid chromatography - gel permetion chromatography, complexation chromatography

9. Mass Spectrometry - instrumentation

10. Mass spectrometry - principles of interpretation of the spectra

11. UV / VIS spectrometry - instrumentation, examples of analysis

12. FTIR - instrumentation, basic interpretation of spectra, examples of analysis

13. NMR - instrumentation, basic interpretation of spectra, examples of analysis

14. Analysis of sulfur, nitrogen and oxygen heterocompounds in hydrocarbon samples
