A number of secondary metabolites are among important biotech products used in medicine, food and chemical industry and in many other areas of human activity. Although metabolic pathways for the synthesis of these compounds are based on metabolites of the general (primary) metabolism, they are specific to particular groups of organisms and have different regulatory mechanisms. The lectures explain the general relationships between primary and secondary metabolism and evolution of metabolic pathways of secondary metabolism. After a survey of the individual groups of secondary metabolites, closer attention is paid to microbial and plant compounds such as antibiotics, cancerostatics, alkaloids, terpenic oils etc.. In detail are discussed its biosynthetic pathways, physico-chemical properties, biological activity, the mechanisms of interaction with other organisms and resistance to their effects. Part of the seminar is an individual work devoted to a selected group of secondary metabolites.

Students will be able to: characterize important groups or individual compounds produced by secondary metabolism; describe the important metabolic pathways for the synthesis of secondary metabolites and their regulation; propose application of the most important secondary metabolites; recognize the risks associated with the mechanism and evolution of resistance to secondary metabolites such as used in medicine, food, etc. Last update: Hladíková Jana (12.12.2017)
