Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

characterize the surface layer of glass and ceramic materials,

explain the mechanism of corrosion, types of corrosion and degradation processes,

describe the methods used for the investigation of glass and ceramic materials surfaces

provide ways of preserving and restoring glass and ceramic materials.

1. Development of surface treatment techniques of ceramic materials from the Neolithic period until the present time

2. Classification of surface treatment techniques from different perspectives, use of glazes, engobes, raw materials, properties

3. Historical dyes (inorganic and organic) and pigments, types of decoration, decorative techniques

4. Mechanismus and types of damage of ceramic surfaces, aging of ceramic materials

5. Development of chemistry and technology of glass materials and an overview of the decorative techniques

6. Mechanism and corrosion types of glass surfaces

7. Archaeological materials - removal of glass and ceramic from the ground, glass and ceramic materials storage

8. Lustre painting - decorating the surface of glass

9. Stain - stained glass

10. Functional layers prepared by sol-gel method, conservation of the mosaic "Last Judgement" (Prague Castle)

11. Other methods of decorating the glass surface (low-melting and organic paintings), gold leaf

12. Methods used for the investigation of glass and ceramic materials surfaces

13. Ethics of conservators, removing of former conservation steps

14. Survey of materials and methods used for cleaning and conservation of glass and ceramics
