The course gives an overview of some procedures which are used for analysis of samples taken from atmosphere, water and soil. It should help the student in selecting a suitable analytical method adequate to the problem to be solved.

choose analytical method for the determination of some analytes in selected environmental matrices, which fulfil requirements given by the purpose of analysis

Syllabus -

1. Harmful pollutants in atmosphere, emissions, immissions, immission limits, sampling methods for atmosphere

2. Outdoor atmosphere: sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen oxides

3. Outdoor atmosphere: ammonia, carbon monoxide, ozone

4. Pre-concentration from air on solid sorbent

5. Volatile hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in atmosphere

6. Indoor atmosphere and measurement of emissions - formaldehyde, phenol

7. Harmful pollutants in water: basic descriptors of water quality (pH, CHSK, BSK)

8. Volatile organic contaminants in water, headspace analytical methods

9. Purge and trap methods, micro-extraction

10. Nonvolatile contaminants in water, extraction, evaporation of solvent from extracts

11. Inorganic contaminants (heavy metals, nitrates, phosphates)

12 Harmful pollutants in soil: soil sampling, isolation of organic and inorganic contaminants from soil

13. Pesticides in soil, bio-concentration of persistent organic pollutants

14. Polychlorinated dibenzofurans and dibenzodioxins
