The subject includes an overview of detection principles which are applied in modern sensors of chemical quantities. The main attention is focused on chemical gas sensors with semiconductive sensitive layers. There is given a detailed explanation of following topics: physico-chemical principles of detection, sensor architecture, selection of material for sensitive layers, deposition techniques of sensitive layers, measurement of sensor response in both dc- and ac- mode and mathematical methods of processing signal from both individual sensors and sensor arrays. Also overview of commercially produced chemical gas sensors and their application areas is included.

Students obtain written materials with text of lectures for their annotations and study. Obligatory part of the subject is presence on the organized excursion.

Modes of sensor operation and measurement (dc- and ac- sensitivity, Nyquist diagrams, equivalent circuit parameters) 11. Interferent species, inhibitors and catalytic poisons 12. Sensor arrays, electronic nose, methods of data processing (Principal Component Analysis, cluster analysis) 13. Commercially produced semiconductor gas sensors and their application 14.
