The aim of the course is to acquaint students with polymeric systems for targeted drug delivery to specific sites in the body, with various routes of administration, with ligands for specific targeting of these systems, with the design of their structure and synthesis. The systems for sustained or timed release of active ingredients and systems enabling to bypass some undesirable properties of drugs will be described. Students will study both the systems that are already used in clinical practice and those that are only in various stages of clinical testing or just in basic research. The systems described will be divided according to the structure (the water-soluble polymers, polymer conjugates of proteins, liposomes, nanoparticles, hybrid stimuli-responsive systems), purpose (e.g. targeted cancerostatics, contraceptive implants vectors for gene therapy) and active ingredients (a chemotherapeutic agent, a protein, a nucleic acid, a radionuclide).
