Annotation -
Subject is focused on deep understanding of the relations between structure of metallic materials, their deffects and resulting physical and mechanical properties. Physical background of plastic deformation, physical degradation processes and selected processing technologies of metals are presented.

Students will be able to:

  • Understand the physical background of metallurgical processes.
  • Describe the phenomena during physical degradation of metallic materials.
  • Apply the theoretical knowledge in design of new materials and in innovation of processing technologies.

Syllabus -

Structure of metals and alloys: Internal structure of metals and alloys, symmetry of crystals, atomic structure, electron theory of metals, band theory, magnetic and electrical properties.

Defects of crystal structure: Point, linear, planar and volume defects.

Consequences of presence of defects: Diffusion in metals, plastic deformation of metals, deformation strengthening, recovery and recrystallization, fatigue, creep, influence of defects on mechanical properties.

Application of presence of defects: grain boundary engineering, heat treatment and thermomechanical treatment.
