Annotation -
The course is focused on theoretical knowledge and practical aspects of practical application of microorganisms and plants for production of low-molecular and high-molecular substances on industrial scale, preparation of microbial and plant producers, methods of their cultivation and fermentation in large volumes, isolation and product purification. In addition to the use of microorganisms and plants in various branches such as remediation applications, pharmacology, water treatment.

Aim of the course -

Student will have an overview of industrially important microorganisms, their characteristics and their importance. They will familiarize themselves with sources of industrially used microorganisms, their methods of isolation, methods of characterization of natural isolates, with accumulation techniques, cultivation conditions, methods of breeding of industrially important microorganisms. They will also learn about basic microbial production, product isolation and purification.

Syllabus -

The subject contains several blocks: a) General overview of industrially important microorganisms, their characteristics and meaning;

b) information on large cycles in nature (cycle of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur) the role of microorganisms and plants and their significance in the cycle of elements; (c) sources of industrially used micro-organisms, their isolation, methods of characterization of natural isolates, accumulation techniques, growth, cultivation conditions. Most of the presentations are devoted to (d) assembling of culture media for industrially used microorganisms, raw materials (e) principles of breeding of industrially important microorganisms, mutations, genetic material exchange in bacteria, yeasts and molds, gene manipulation, targeted mutagenesis, construction of microbial strains. industrial scale, f) regulation of microbial metabolism, transport. A separate chapter is a lecture on production facilities, types of bioreactors, types of fermentation processes and their regulation and overview of basic microbial production, product isolation and purification.

In the next block, attention is paid to g) main metabolic pathways of industrially important organisms, primary and secondary metabolism. H) Preparation of essential amino acids, vitamins, antibiotics, organic acids and probiotics. Other important products of secondary metabolism of plants and industrial preparation of microbial and plant enzymes.

Another lecture is focused on microbiological and enzymatic biotransformation, j) genetically modified organisms, preparation, use and meaning. Risks related to the use of GMOs and relevant legislation; and (k) the use of micro-organisms and plants for the removal of environmental contaminants
