Annotation -
The subject is aimed at the explanation of the possibilities and limitations of the current analytical methods of trace element analysis in biological samples and the rules of their applications. The lectures are focused on the problems of trace analysis, the sample taking techniques, the analyte pre-concentration techniques and the modern methods for the determination of trace elements. Emphasis is put on the understanding of connections among the composition and nature of the sample, the properties and expected content of analyte that affect analyte behaviour during individual steps of the process. Interpretation is conducted so that the student at the end is able to select the optimum or appropriate approach to analyses in specific cases. In addition, the subject is focused on the chemical forms of trace elements in biological materials and the methods of element speciation analysis in foods and other biological materials.

Aim of the course -

At the end, the students will understand the principles of the analytical methods applied for trace element analysis, know the practical rules of laboratory work in trace analysis and achieve key competences to carry out these analyses using various analytical methods. Students will be able to predict possible interferences encountered in a variety of methods in specific cases and to propose an appropriate solution of the problem. They will be able to choose the suitable way of sample preparation, the measurement technique and its main conditions with regard to the sample’s nature.

Syllabus -

The content of subject is divided into three parts.

The first part focuses on the background and conditions of trace elements analysis and includes (a) general problems of trace analysis, (b) sampling strategy, (c) sample preparation (decomposition and optional ways) and (d) pre-concentration method and separation of trace elements.

The second part is focused on the instrumental methods of trace elements determination and includes the following topics (e) atomic absorption spectrometry, (f) methods of generating of volatile compounds of trace elements, (g) optical emission spectrometry including ICP-OES and its applications, (h) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and (i) electrochemical methods.

The third part is devoted to the chemical species of trace elements in biological materials and the methods of speciation analysis and includes (j) separation techniques in speciation analysis and (k) the use of ICP-MS in speciation analysis.
