Annotation -
This is a course about Czech and European politics, which means this is a course about individuals, identities, and institutions. How do Czech come to think and reason about politics and about public interest? What is the role that identities play in affecting the political judgments that individuals make? How do Czech and European political institutions respond to the demands of a diverse public that disagrees about issues related to justice, income and wealth inequality, climate change, reproductive rights, the power of the executive, and the role that government ought to play in the lives of the governed? And how do we make sense of this seemingly peculiar contemporary moment in Czech politics? These are not easy questions, but they are ones for which social sciences provide a useful foundation to guide our inquiry. The objective of this course is to discuss various concepts and theoretical frameworks that help us understand the messiness and complexity of Czech public politics in the European Union context. In addition to classroom lectures and discussion sections, students will be required to apply concepts and theoretical frameworks to contemporary issues in Czech and European politics.
