Annotation -
The aim of this course is to explain the principles of toxicity testing mainly as a tool for determination of effects of chemical compounds present in the environment and their impact on different biological species and ecosystem balance. Besides chemical analysis, estimation of ecotoxicity of chemical compounds is an important part of environmental monitoring. Broad spectrum of toxicity tests and their application in waste management or environemntal protection is demonstrated. The student will be guided through the whole process of toxicity testing from sample collection, planning of experimental design to final data interpretation.

Successful completion of the exam.

The exam starts with written part (student must get min 50 points from 100). After successful written part the oral exam follows. The exam is focused on topics within the syllabus and the recommended literature.

We recommend practicing in e-learning before the exam. Any consultations (even in written form by email) should be requested at least 7 days before the scheduled exam. Otherwise, there is a risk that the teacher will not have enough time for corrections. However, any practice in e-learning is optional and does not affect the outcome of the final exam.

1. Introduction to ecotoxicology. PEC, PNEC. Bioaccumulation.

2. Principles of ecology. Multi-species toxicity tests. Microcosms, mesocosms, field studies.

3. Genotoxicity: Mutagenesis. Genotoxicity tests.

4. Genotoxicity: Carcinogenesis. Teratogenesis. FETAX.

5. Toxicity tests. Testing of chemicals. Environmental samples. Sample treatment. Leaching tests. Dilution series. Factors affecting the toxicity of substances.

6. Toxicity test design, evaluation of toxicity of substances. Dose-response curve and its interpretation. Basic ecotoxicological indices. NOEC, LOEC, EC50. Statistical evaluation in ecotoxicology.

8. Aquatic and terrestrial toxicity tests with producers.

Learning outcomes -

Students will be able to:

  • Explain the link between mutagenesis and carcinogenesis at the cellular level and critically assess the informative value and limitations of individual genotoxicity tests (e.g., proper interpretation of a negative test result).
  • Differentiate between the specific requirements of testing pure chemical substances versus complex environmental matrices (e.g., mixtures, contaminated soil, wastewater) and select the appropriate sample preparation method (direct solid-phase testing, leaching, or extraction).
  • Describe the methodological design of standard ecotoxicological tests, specify their limitations (e.g., sterility requirements, temporal and spatial scales), and justify the selection of test organisms.
  • Interpret dose-response curves and determine standard ecotoxicological toxicity indices (EC50, NOEC, LOEC).
  • Design and justify an appropriate battery of toxicity tests for the environmental risk assessment of specific sample types or pollutants.
