The course is intended for first-year students of bachelor's degree programs. Its goal is to systematically review and deepen key chemical concepts and skills that are assumed to be mastered at the beginning of the first semester of study and that are necessary for successful completion of university studies. The course focuses on basic orientation in the periodic table, chemical nomenclature, types of chemical bonds and compounds, balancing of chemical equations, working with units and basic chemical calculations. The course also focuses on understanding the structure of the atom, the concept of orbitals, oxidation numbers and valency, and the ability to analyse the role of individual substances in chemical reactions. The course also introduces students to basic laboratory concepts. In regular seminars, students will solve an extensive set of tasks and problems that will allow them to effectively move on to more advanced topics in university chemistry.

Assessment is awarded if the student obtains a sufficient number of points from the Entrance Test (this threshold is determined based on the statistical distribution of the results of all students). If the student does not obtain the required number of points, credit is awarded if two conditions are met:
1) at least 70% participation in seminars (i.e. participation in 5 seminars out of 7); in case of illness, it will be possible to join the seminar online or provide a doctor's note
2) students complete the assigned homework in electronic form on the e-learning website of the course, within the deadline specified on the website

The course will have a form of two-hour seminars over a period of 7 weeks. A significant emphasis will be placed on independent voluntary work by students with the help of e-learning materials. Studets write an introductory test covering the expected high-school level of chemistry. If a student obtains enough points, the assessment is recieved.
If the result is lower, the assessment is awarded upon meeting two conditions: 1) at least 70% participation in seminars (i.e., participation in 5 seminars out of 7); in case of higher absence due to illness, a doctor's note must be provided 2) students complete the assigned homework in electronic form on the e-learning pages of the course, within the deadline specified on the course pages

1. Composition and structure of the atom - electron configuration of elements, atomic orbitals, valence electrons. Relationship between the position of an element in the periodic table (PTP) and its oxidation number, maximum valency. 2. Chemical bonding and periodic table of elements - electronegativity, bond polarity. Types of bonds. Lewis formula of a molecule. Positions of elements in PTP, their properties, trends in PTP. 3. Chemical nomenclature - names and chemical formulae of binary compounds, acids and their salts, trivial names of common compounds. 4. Chemical equations and reactions - classification of chemical reactions. Balancing of chemical equations without changes in ox. numbers; ionic notation. Protolytic reactions - theory of acids and bases. Neutralization. 5. Redox reactions - change in oxidation numbers, reducer/oxidizer, balancing of redox equations, electropotential series of metals. 6. Chemical calculations - unit conversions; mass, relative mass of atoms and molecules, amount of substance, Avogadro's constant, use in basic calculations. Basic techniques in the laboratory. 7. Physical chemistry - basics of thermochemistry, chemical equilibrium and equilibrium constant, effect of reaction conditions on the rate of chemical reactions, influences violating the equilibrium state.
