Annotation -
This course is a continuation of the Biochemistry A course. It is intended to lead students to a deeper understanding of biological and biochemical relationships and the ways in which biochemical processes are regulated. Therefore, the topics of individual lectures are selected to reflect knowledge from various areas of biochemistry (molecular genetics, metabolism, immunology, clinical biochemistry, and plant biochemistry).

Teaching methods -

Biochemistry B is a theoretical course. Students acquire knowledge primarily in the field of biochemistry through lectures, which include practical aspects of how this knowledge can be applied in real life. After each lecture, an e-learning course with a test is available, and completing it is a requirement for obtaining the course credit.

Learning outcomes -

Students will be able to:

navigate biochemical literature and understand biochemical principles that are currently relevant across all fields of food technology, agriculture, and medicine. Their knowledge will also prepare them for further studies in master's and doctoral programs where biochemistry is considered an essential prerequisite.

In addition, students will be able to:

• Explain the principles of gas metabolism, essential factors, and the regulation of enzyme activity.

• Describe hormonal signaling and its connection to information transfer across membranes.

• Describe how metabolism is coordinated among organs and explain the role of compartmentation of metabolic processes within the cell.

• Classify organisms by metabolic type and explain the principles of metabolism in photolithotrophic organisms.

• Summarize the principles of genetic engineering and discuss their practical applications.

• Apply biochemical knowledge to interpret clinical parameters, propose appropriate analytical methods, and explain the biochemical basis of selected diseases.
