Annotation -
This subject requires experimental work in laboratory. First of all, students will prepare a short literature review on a given biotechnological topic. Further, they will learn experimental and/or computational methodology associated with the specified topic and prepare a systematic plan, which will serve as a template for the experimental work. During the work, students will learn basic methodology of collection and processing of experimental data as well as to evaluate and compare the information obtained from literature.

Teaching methods -

Students work on specific experimental projects, independently carry out experiments, search for relevant information in scientific literature, and consult their approaches with their supervisor. They process the results of their work in the form of a scientific paper and present their findings orally, concluding with a professional discussion with members of the examination committee.

Requirements to the exam -

The student carries out specialized laboratory work according to the assignment provided by their supervisor. During this activity, the student obtains original data, which are processed into a scientific report in accordance with the requirements specified in the e-learning course.

Once the written report is approved by the supervisor, the student presents their experimental results to a panel of experts. Through a professional discussion, the panel evaluates the student's understanding of the topic.

Syllabus -

The object of Biotechnology: Laboratory I is individual work on topics announced by relevant supervisors. Students will learn modern laboratory techniques particularly in the following fields: biotechnology, microbiology, cell physiology, bioengineering and others.

The work on the topic will start by searching for relevant literature. Then the student together with his/her supervisor will prepare a work plan as a guideline for the following laboratory experiments. The experimental results will be processed, evaluated and compared with the data available in the literature. The output of experimental work will be a report written in the form of a scientific publication with the usual structure. It is necessary to comply with all the formal requirements for the scope of work, the structure of the text, tables and images as well as the literature citation. Students will also prepare an electronic presentation as a basis for the scientific defence in front of a committee composed of pedagogues.

Learning outcomes -

Students will be able to:

Plan and carry out laboratory experiments in the range of available methodologies that student designed in collaboration with the supervisor for his/her individual topic;

Carry out basic methods of analysis and evaluation of experimental data;

Process the obtained results in the form of scientific paper with precise citing of literary sources;

Present and defend the obtained results of experimental work in the form of presentation and discussion.
