Annotation -
The course provides overview of features shared by living systems, origin of life and development of livings and introduces the structure and function relationship at the levels ranging from molecular entities, through organization of the (particularly eukaryotic) cell and tissues to the relationship of organisms in an ecosystem. It further provides an insight into underlying mechanisms, transmission and expression of genetic information, heredity, ontogenesis of the cell and organism and evolution and introduces the diversity of modern organisms.

Aim of the course -

Student will be able to:

Describe coherently structural components of the cell, specific intracellular structures and compartments and the architecture of tissues; understand their respective structure and function relationship.

Explain fundamental events during i) the cell cycle, ii) hereditary transmission genetic determinants and expression of the gene; iii) plant and animal reproduction.

Explain fundamental mechanisms of evolution, diversity of organisms reflecting accumulation of evolutionary novelties and relationships affecting the life in an ecosystem.

Student will acquire the knowledge required for further study in courses focused on specialized fields of biology
