Annotation -
This course provides students with a hands-on opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in the fields of forensic and especially toxicological analysis. The laboratory includes several specialized tasks that introduce students to advanced instrumental analytical techniques commonly used in practice. Students will gain knowledge in sample preparation, sample analysis, data processing, evaluation, and interpretation of the obtained data.

Teaching methods -

The course is conducted in small student groups working independently on assigned tasks under the supervision of a teaching assistant. The assistant introduces students to the task, verifies their initial knowledge, explains the analytical principle, and is available for consultation throughout the entire task. Students carry out the practical part of the task in the laboratory. At the end of each task, students submit a written protocol, which is then reviewed by the assistant.

The laboratory course is completed with a graded credit, which students receive upon submission of all protocols and successful completion of the final test.

1. Profiling and quantification of alcohols by GC-MS

2. Forensic analysis of volatile compounds in evidence material using GC-HRMS I – sample preparation and analysis

3. Forensic analysis of volatile compounds in evidence material using GC-HRMS II –interpretation of results

4. Detection of toxic alkaloids using LC-MS/MS I – sample preparation and analysis

5. Detection of toxic alkaloids using LC-MS/MS II – interpretation of results

6. Application of infrared spectroscopy in forensic and toxicological analysis

7. Determination of cannabinoid content using LC-UV I – sample preparation and analysis

8. Determination of cannabinoid content using LC-UV II – interpretation of results

9. Determination of lead or cadmium by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS)

10. Use of spectrophotometry in forensic and toxicological analysis

11. Detection of undeclared pharmaceutical adulterants in natural products using LC-HRMS

12. Detection and quantification of halogenated environmental contaminants using a modern instrumental method: combustion ion chromatography

13. Use of multi-detection analytical methods to assess food authenticity: organic vs. conventional production I – method development, sample preparation and analysis

14. Use of multi-detection analytical methods to assess food authenticity: organic vs. conventional production II – interpretation of results, final test

Learning outcomes -

Students will learn to practically use instrumental analytical techniques. They will gain practical experience in sample preparation, analysis, and especially in data processing and interpretation. They will strengthen their laboratory skills, learn to collaborate in small teams, and improve their ability to report scientific results in writing.

Knowledge of analytical chemistry, theoretical background in instrumental techniques. General knowledge obtained during specialized courses (Environmental Contaminants and Their Analysis, Fundamentals of Food Safety, Forensic Clinical Toxicology).
