Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

understand the problems of environmental evaluation of organic compounds with focus on biodegradability and toxicity in aquatic environment;

know the basic biodegradability tests and assess their suitability for testing purposes, and their physico-chemical properties;

know biogeochemical cycles of biogenic elements (C, H, O, N, S, P) in relation to the redox potential of the environment, the principle of anaerobic decomposition of organic compounds with emphasis on the readily degradable substances (xenobiotics) and the design and purpose of the tests methanogenic activity and their use for the characterization of anaerobic biomass substrates;

specify the acute and chronic effects on ecosystems and select the appropriate test.
