The course is directed to the theoretical and practical knowledge dealing with microorganisms in their environment. Lectures will include information on characterisation of microorganisms, degradation of substrates. Special attention will be paid to the influence of environmental conditions on metabolical and physiological activity, microorganism detection and enumeration. Requirements on microbiological laboratory and general instructions for safe microbiological handling will be mentioned in the last part. Part of the subject will be directed to the laboratory experiments. Students will be introduced into application of basic cultivation techniques and rapid methods for detection and characterization of microorganisms in environmental samples.
