Annotation -
Biotechnological processes have an irreplaceable role in the protection of environment. The use of biological processes for the degradation of environmental contaminants, in the environment-friendly mining and other new methods for environmental protection, are among the most dynamically developing biotechnologies. Introductory lectures provide students with general information needed to design specific technologies. Individual groups of environmental contaminants, metabolic degradation pathways and kinetics of biodegradation processes are characterized. The environmental factors affecting these biotechnological processes and the design of the bioremediation process are also explained. Particular examples of bioremediation processes in different types of environment are discussed. Attention is also paid to the use of microorganisms in the bioremediation of heavy metals and mineral mining. Final lectures provide information about the destructive effects of microorganisms on different materials and means for their protection. In the seminar, the students prepare project describing a specific bioremediation process.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

  • suggest the preparation of a biological agent for effective decontamination
  • design a biotechnological process for the decontamination of various types of matrix
  • evaluate the risks associated with the presence of contaminants in the environment and with the proposed biotechnological intervention
