The subject includes an overview of detection principles which are applied in modern sensors of chemical quantities. The main attention is focused on chemiresistors with semiconductive sensitive layers. There is given a detailed explanation of following topics: physico-chemical principles of detection, sensor architecture, selection of material for sensitive layers, measurement of sensor response in both dc- and ac- mode and mathematical methods of processing signal from both individual sensors and sensor arrays. Also overview of commercially produced chemical gas sensors and their application areas is included.
