The aim of the course is to provide the basics of the chemistry of pharmaceuticals which should help the students to start their professional career in pharmaceutical industry (R&D, manufacture) and in the drug distribution. The introductory lectures cover general pharmaceutical chemistry: basic terms and definitions, introduction to pharmacology, drug design and development. The main part of the course deals with the main drug therapeutic groups and highlights the structures and syntheses of the most frequently used drugs from each group.

EXAMINATION

Before the oral examination, a written examination test is taken which has two parts, the overall time limit (parts A+B) is 100 minutes.

Part A: basic organic chemistry related to the API chemistry) and basid knowledge of Pharmacology (50 marks);

Part B: advanced organic chemistry focusing on API syntheses and on medicinal chemistry (50 marks);

The oral part of the examination only takes place if the student obtained at least 35 marks in the part A and at least 50 marks in total in the parts A and B of the written examination. If the student fails the examination, he/she is entitled to repeat it up to twice (i.e. each student is entitled one regular examination and two resits).
