Laboratory course follows up the courses of Environmental Engineering, Wastewater Treatment, Waste Management and Treatment and Sludge Management. Students will learn to apply their theoretical knowledge from these courses and will practice the basic methods of waste and waste water treatment in a laboratory scale.

Both theoretical and practical understanding of basic analytical methods used in environmental technology and engineering focused on wastewater treantment and waste and sludge management.

Practical experience with working in a laboratory.

• Introductory session

General rules

Organizational issues – distribution of students into groups

Information on the first assignment – Sampling of lake sediments

• Assignment 1 - Sampling of lake sediments (field trip)

Two day-long trips (each with 5 groups)

Sampling and conservation of sediments

• Assignment 2 – Complex analyses of the sediment samples and further evaluation in view of EU legislation

• Assignment 3 – Ammonia removal from contaminated groundwater

Stripping

Membrane separation

• Assignment 4 – Kinetics of substrate degradation

Nitrification

Denitrification

• Assignment 5 – Anaerobic degradation of organic substrates

Biomethane Potential (BMP)
