The subject is focused on the description of the functions of catalysts, their general properties and mechanism of action. The emphasis of the course is on the characterization of heterogeneous catalysts, both from a spectroscopic and microscopic point of view, as well as from the point of view of evaluating chemical activity. Special emphasis is placed on the relationship between the spectroscopic properties and the observed activity of the catalyst.The course includes examples of the most important applications of catalysis in industry.

Students will be able:

  • to solve research and applied tasks from the fields of heterogeneous, homogeneous and enzyme catalysis,
  • to monitor behaviour of catalysts in both laboratory and practice,
  • to use the results of characterization techniques applied to heterogeneous catalysts,
  • to select an appropriate catalyst for both laboratory and industrial applications

Besides the recommended books on catalysis there is a plenty of information available under the key word "catalysis" in the electronic databases in the CIS (Central Information System) of the VSCHT. For applied catalysis, the most recommended is the "Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry".
