The aim of the course is to explain to students the issue of water in the landscape and in the environment. It discusses the importance of water for humans from a chemical, physical, biological, social and cultural point of view, the principles of water circulation on the planet and in user systems, the hydrological situation in our territory and the principles of sustainable water management. It presents the possibilities of how to effectively retain water in the landscape and how to prevent the so-called agricultural drought, introduces the importance of water bodies in the landscape and the concept of their revitalization. It partly focuses on the process of creating the ecological character of the landscape in differently loaded environments of aquatic habitats and on the present biota. It introduces current topics such as water reuse, the impacts of climate change on the hydrological regime of the landscape or limited water resources as a cause of international conflicts. Theoretical findings are documented on specific cases. As part of the exercise, a large space is devoted to practical teaching in the field, individual monitoring of choosed localities and discussion of current water management topics.

Students will be able to:

• understand the basic context of human activity and the aquatic ecosystem;

• assess the condition of the site in terms of water in the landscape or water management use;

• propose appropriate measures to improve the hydrological regime of agricultural or urbanised landscapes;

• understand the issues of sustainable water management.

An accomplishment of the field exercises (biological monitoring - site observation, condition recording, sampling), laboratory processing and evaluation of samples taken during field exercises; participation in the excursion; defense of two individual projects:

1) characterization of the selected locality in terms of water in the landscape or water management use,

2) elaboration of an educational case study.

Course completion requirements -
Last update: Šmejkalová Pavla Dr. Ing. (13.04.2023)

Requirements for obtaining credit: participation in field exercises, participation in excursions, elaboration and defense of two individual projects.

Requirements for passing the exam: achieving at least 51 points out of 100 in the exam test.

Possibility of improving grades B - E:

  • by an exam in the remedial term
  • by prior agreement, because SIS allows registration for the next term only with an F result
  • with this procedure, there is no risk of deterioration of the grade
  • only the last grade (regardless of the number of attempts) is counted towards the academic average
