Annotation -
Physical Chemistry A provides a solid introduction into phenomenological and molecular physical chemistry. Physical Chemistry A is inherently linked with the Physical Chemistry B, focusing on foundations of thermodynamics with applications to chemical systems. A brief overview of mathematical methods in physical chemistry is provided in the introduction. Thermodynamics is built axiomatically and interpreted with the use of statistical mechanics. Applications of physical chemistry in different fields of chemistry are emphasized. MAPLE-based practical classes are provided.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to

  • understand theoretical foundations of physical chemistry, in the first part of the course namely the thermodynamics and statistical mechanics
  • apply the methods of physical chemistry in various fields of chemistry
  • formulate a problem, to search necessary data in the literature and to solve it using a mathematical SW
