The aim of the course is to understand the effects of environmental pollutants on humans and other organisms. Types and mechanisms of toxic effects and factors influencing these effects, biotransformation, excretion, biodegradation and bioaccumulation of environmental pollutants are explained within the course. The content of the course contains descriptions of the most important groups of environmental pollutants, their sources in the environment, applications and negative effects on living organisms. The course also includes an introduction into Environmental Risk Assessment.

Students will be able to:

•Define and explain type and mechanisms of xenobiotic action in organisms, their biotransformation and excretion and processes of xenobiotics biodegradation and

bioaccumulation.

•Describe the toxicity and adverse effects of currently common environmental pollutants on plants and other organisms.

•Assess the potential negative effects and risks to humans arising from exposure to selected pollutant groups.

Grading Policy:

Percentage contributions to the final grade are as follows:

Team project (project report, 20%; team project presentation, 20%).

Written exam, 60%.

Team project:

Students will be grouped into teams of 2 students to work jointly on a project to investigatea toxicant for which there is reason to be concerned about possible adverse health effects on the human population.

In the second half of the course, teams must schedule at least one meeting with a teacher to discuss the progress of their project. Failure to hold this meeting will result in a 20% reduction in the project grade.

Written Exam:

To complete the course students, have to pass written exam with minimum score of 50%.
