The course is based on the development of a project in which students elaborate the assigned work with a selected topic given by a teacher applying individually searched information and consultations with the teacher or other experts. The project critically evaluates the applicable technological solutions for selected environmental problem. Between such assignments, there are different case studies of the environmental burden remediation or of the treatment of specific waste stream that are real cases from practise. For the project development, the students use measured data that were obtained in laboratory directly by the students, estimated, deduced or taken over. The project alternative solutions are compared in terms of technological, legislative and economical relations. Therefore, the students acquire complex engineering competencies and they apply their current theoretical knowledge in practical way.
Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

  • independently obtain information about the technologies and technological units used for processing of waste materials
  • decide about the effectivity of the assesed processes and its optimization on the basis of the obtained data
  • estimate costs for the technological solutions
  • understand the legislation related to the operation of the technology
  • write relevant report, make a presentation and defend proposed solutions and conclusions before an expert committee.

Students will deal with the study of decontamination procedures and waste treatment processes, physico-chemical characteristics of the processes in related devices and with the study of their specific arangements and integration to technological units and the possibility of optimization of individual operations. In addition, the students will focus on legislation related to decontamination processes and perform related technological-economical evaluation of proposed/assessed options. They will present their projects outputs in the form of technical text with the structure similar to thesis and the appropriate range and then, they will defend the work by an oral presentation in fron tof a committee.
