The subject widens the basic knowledge of biochemistry of microorganisms targeted on the organization of cell metabolism and their regulatory mechanisms. Cell cycle regulation of prokaryotes and eukaryotes is part of this. Biochemical principles of extremophilic microorganisms are included.Next topics are determinants of pathogens virulence, synthesis of antimicrobials peptides and antibiotics (secondary metabolites). The quorum-sensing regulation and the formation of bacterial biofilm are explained.
Aim of the course -

Student will gain the knowledge in these fields:

  • metabolism of different groups of microorganisms
  • regulation of processes as sporogenesis, cell cycle, secretion and transport of low and high molecular matters from the cells
  • mechanisms of action of antimicrobials agents
  • mechanisms effecting the microbial pathogenicity
  • responses of microorganisms to various types of stress (heat-shock, oxidative stress), VBNC cells
  • adaptation of microorganisms to extreme conditions.
