The aim of the course is to provide students with basic information about the importance of environmental care, a contemporary view of sustainable development and to acquaint them with the basic approaches of environmental management systems (EMS) and its application in companies. The main subject of interest will be the interpretation of the requirements of the ISO 14 001 standard, the differences in the implementation of the standard compared to the EMAS program will be clarified, and the requirements of the ISO 50001 standard, which deals with energy management systems. Last but not least, the interpretation will touch on some current directions in environmental care and their applications at the corporate level, such as the circular economy, renewable energy sources, Smart Energy, voluntary sustainability reporting standards - GRI, etc.

Students will understand and orient themselves:

  • in contemporary perspectives on environmental protection, including sustainable development
  • in the role of the OECD, UN, EU towards environmental care and activities
  • in key terms of the environmental management system
  • in the sources of valid eco-legislation
  • in the links of EMS to corporate quality management systems (QMS) and occupational safety

Students will be able to

  • assess and argue the importance of the impact of industrial, construction, transport, agricultural enterprises on the environment and their impact on business success
  • to present knowledge about current approaches in environmental care at the company level
  • to participate in the work of a team that deals with the implementation or maintenance of the environmental management system in the sense of the ISO 14001 standard, resp. EMAS
  • after completing a short-term (usually a daily audit course), perform the function of an internal auditor focused on the examination of the established corporate EMS in the spirit of the ISO 14000 standard.

  • Environment, environmental protection: concept, history, theoretical and institutional approaches (Factor four, Natural capitalism)
  • Activities of the OSN, OECD, EU: Sustainable Development, New Green Deal: history, content, practical consequences
  • Mandatory and voluntary instruments aimed at environmental protection: legislative instruments (overview, sources), normative recommendations ISO 14 001 and EMAS: differences and coherence of both managerial environmental approaches (statistics)
  • ISO 14 000 standards, the principles of their implementation, certification, integration with quality management systems in the sense of ISO 9001 standards and occupational safety and health systems ISO 45001, or and energy management systems in the sense of ISO 50001 standards.
