Prerequisites for the subject are courses Physical chemistry and Thermodynamics of materials, knowledge is replenished for the field of metallurgy. Thermodynamics and kinetics of metallurgical processes will be discussed. The part focused on corrosion starts from characterization of conductivity, electrolyte behaviour and electrode equilibrium. Discussion of mixed potential theory, description of general corrosion processes together with available experimental techniques make the knowledge deeper in this field.

Students will be able to:

solve equilibrium tasks for standard metal extraction processes,

evaluate the influence of conditions on high temperature processes,

understand the principles of electrolysis,

understand the principles of corrosion processes,

understand the principles and mechanisms of important forms of corrosion,

understand the principles of experimental corrosion techniques and their limitations.

1. Description of metallurgical and corrosion processes based on physical chemistry.

2. Metallurgical processes - heat balances, entropy changes, equilibrium.

3. deltaG-T diagrams, oxidation, reduction.

4. Pyrometallurgical processes, slags.

5. Thermodynamics of liquid metal solutions.

6. Conductivity - conductors, semiconductors, electrolytes.

7. Electrolytes - dissociation, charge transfer, mobility, solvatation, acidobasic equilibrium.

8. Equilibrium in electrochemical systems, equilibrium potential.

9. Potential-pH diagrams.

10. Electrochemical kinetics, basic principles.

11. Mixed potential, depolarisation, electrode reactions of the hydrogen and oxygen.

12. Corrosion in electrolytes - electrochemical description.

13. Electrochemical experimental techniques, corrosion rate measurement.

14. Electrometallurgical extraction processes.
