The models are divided into two categories: physical and mathematical models - the advantages and disadvantages of both categories are discussed from the point of view of their application in wastewater treatment. The terminology used for description of mathematical models is described in detail together with the procedure of model construction. The necessary fractionation of both wastewater and biomass for the purpose of mathematical modeling is introduced. The matrix used in Activated Sludge Model is explained and its construction illustrated on several examples. The principle of the so-called switching functions is described. By using some demonstration software the simulation of activated sludge process tasks like nitrification, denitrification or biological phosphate removal are solved together with examples of mathematical models of competition between floc-forming and filamentous microorganisms. The role of mathematical models in expert systems for the wastewater treatment plant control is explained and illustrated on examples.
