The subject is focused on understanding heredity principles especially mechanisms and regulation of transfer of genetic information and gene expression in prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. Special emphasis will be put on the main regulatory processes mediated by proteins and RNA regulatory molecules. Other focus is on understanding the variability of genetic information due to mutations and recombination. The subject offers information on the most important methods of DNA analysis as DNA identification, sequencing and analysis of selected sequences by using polymerase chain reaction.
Aim of the course -

Students will know:

Basic principles of molecular genetics and the relationship of their structure and function.

Principles of regulation of transfer of genetic information and its variability due to mutations and recombination

Mechanisms involved in mutation repair.

Basic processes of gene expression as regulation of transcription, in prokaryotes and eukaryotes and posttranscriptional modifications of eukaryotic mRNA, regulation of stability of mRNA and translation, role of small RNAs.

Basic principles of work with DNA, methods of DNA analysis and basic applications of polymerase chain reaction
