The course is focused on the description of relationships among evolution of different types of systems: physical, chemical, biological and sociological (geographical, economical, etc.). It uses 1) the modern knowledge of General Systems Theory and The New Kind of Science – Complexity, 2) basic research including the stages of evolution and tension between chaos and order and 3) the applied research in the field of planning of complex systems and societal systems (people, organizations, companies, cities).
A variety of aspects of systems, asymmetric statistical distribution, processes of evolution and, finally, our human ability to action are discussed. Special attention is paid to the decision-making processes of people, cities and societal systems, identification of control layers and their functions, principles of positive and negative feedback. Exercises are designed either as discussion seminars or as individual or group work of students on particular topics.
