Central Questions for the course include: - What is a region? How do regional communities differ from either local or national communities? - What are the arguments for and against greater planning and coordination at the regional scale? - How does the regional approach differ for land use planning, transportation planning, resource management, and economic development? - Which is more effective: single-use regional plans or integrated approaches? - How does the rise of semi-autonomous public authorities, such as port authorities, act as a model of regional planning? - How do regional authorities relate to local and state agencies? - Who are the largest boosters and opponents of regional management? - Are some planning issues (e.g., transportation, water resources) better suited for regional-level coordination than others (e.g., welfare policy, housing)? - How well can regional planning integrate economic and environmental concerns? The course is intended for students who are interested in developing their knowledge and abilities on comprehension to regional politics applied by local and state governments. The course is based on theoretical knowledge that is supported by project and analysis of development of a chosen region. Students become aware of theoretical roots of the policy implemented at the EU or state levels. Hat would help students understand the historical evolution and contemporary regional policy at the EU and state levels. Students would be able to identify main regional theories and put them into the geopolitical and historical framework. They describe results and tendencies of applied regional policies and know foundations of nowadays attitudes to the regional development.

The course objective is for students to be introduced to management of various approaches of and concepts for sustainable spatial planning and regional development, with Czech Republic and Europe as its main focus of interest. The main segment of the course is the insight into the history of planning, as well as the presentation of current projects. Furthermore, the course covers EU-Regional Policies and new concepts, such as New Urbanism, New Regionalism, and the like.

Enabling students to acquire and master knowledge on sustainability issues in regional development and planning, then to analyze diverse concepts of spatial development, as well as to generate new knowledge through practical application and interactive discussions.
