The course starts with the description of the Czech and EU legislation for wastewater discharge. The main water and sludge line of a municipal wastewater treatment plant is described and individual operations described in detail. The course is focused on biological wastewater treatment by means of activated sludge process. The biochemical and microbial principles of activated sludge process are explained together with principles of kinetic and metabolic selection and activated sludge population dynamics. The lectures are aimed at all practical aspects of activated sludge process like oxygen transfer, aeration and mixing, flocculation and control of activated sludge settling properties, separation of activated sludge in secondary clarifiers or by means of membranes. The use of fixed-film reactor, especially for smaller communities, is described together with construction and design principles of trickling filters, rotating biological contactors and systems combining activated sludge with fixed-film. The course if finished by the description of processes covered by the term of tertiary treatment and the conditions for and possibilities of treated wastewater reuse are explained and illustrated.
