Syllabus -

The subject covers following topics:

  • General terms: Structure and properties of intermediates, effects influencing reaction mechanisms, Hammond postulate, microscopic reversibility, Curtin-Hammett principle. Examples of proposed mechanisms along with supporting experiments.

  • Addition reactions: electrophilic and nucleophilic addition reactions. Mechanisms of addition reaction at C-C and C-O multiple bonds. The mechanisms of important reactions, e.g. the Wittig reaction, ozonolysis.

  • Substitution reactions: nucleophilic and electrophilic substitution. Substitution reactions at sp2 and sp3 hybridized atoms. The mechanisms of important reaction.

  • Radical reactions: General terms, mechanisms of radical reactions, perzistent radicals, radical addition reactions, radical substitution. Examples of SET reactions.

  • Organometallic compounds. The mechanisms of organometallic compounds preparation. The preparation of functionalized organometallics. Basic mechanisms of transition metal catalyzed reactions. Practical applications.

  • Multicomponent reactions: Biginelli, Ugi, and Passerini reaction, transition metal catalyzed multicomponent reactions. Practical applications of multicomponent reactions.

  • Rearrangements: Electrophilic and nucleophilic rearrangements. The mechanisms of important rearrangements. Examples of name rearrangements.
