Annotation -
The course focuses on developing students’ soft skills, particularly in presenting their own research results, interpreting outputs from scientific work, and conducting literature reviews. At the same time, it introduces students to the specifics of communication in academic and professional settings, especially within the context of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The course combines theoretical lectures delivered by experts from both academia and industry with practical exercises focused on rhetoric, the creation of various types of scientific communication (such as articles, abstracts, posters, and graphical abstracts), and the effective use of modern communication channels, including social media. A key outcome of the course is the preparation and delivery of a scientific presentation and the creation of a scientific poster. The course supports students in preparing for the Student Scientific Conference (SVK), writing their final theses, and presenting at professional forums. Students receive individual feedback on their outputs and also participate in peer evaluations, fostering self-reflection and critical thinking.

Course completion requirements -

Credit (Course Attendance Approval):

• Active participation in seminars and exercises.

• Timely submission of a structured CV and motivation letter.

• Active involvement in peer review (evaluation of classmates’ presentations).

• Delivery of a short presentation on a selected topic.

Examination:

• Presentation of a short scientific talk (8–10 minutes).

• Preparation and delivery of a scientific poster.

Teaching methods -

Lectures are conducted with active student participation through discussions, complemented by case studies and practical demonstrations of communication strategies from both academic and industrial contexts. The course is delivered using interactive frontal teaching methods, including tools such as polls, online quizzes, and simulation activities. Emphasis is placed on active student engagement through group work, peer learning, and individual presentations. Throughout the semester, students take part in rhetorical exercises, work on individual projects (poster, presentation), and receive ongoing formative feedback.

The course also incorporates tandem or team teaching involving professionals from practice, particularly from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. It includes the use of AI tools for scientific writing and text analysis.

Requirements to the exam -

1. Submission of a structured CV and a motivation letter.

2. Delivery of a short presentation on a selected (popular science or professional) topic.

3. Preparation and delivery of a short scientific talk (8–10 minutes) on a specialized topic.

4. Creation and presentation of a scientific poster related to the student’s field of study.

Students will be assessed based on content quality, clarity of communication, presentation skills, and responsiveness to feedback. Active participation in peer evaluation of other students’ presentations is also part of the final assessment.

1. Types of Oral Communication: differences between a presentation and a training session; active vs. passive modes of information delivery

2. Creating Scientific Messages: article, poster, lecture, abstract – structure, style, and target audience

3. Principles of Public Speaking: types of speeches, verbal and non-verbal components, the role of emotional intelligence

4. Career Planning: writing a CV and a cover letter, building a professional profile on social media

5. Science Popularization: ways of presenting scientific results to the general public

6. Bibliometrics and Scientometrics: key indicators and principles of research evaluation

7. Basics of Non-Verbal Communication: facial expressions, gestures, posture, use of space

8. Modern Tools in Scientific Communication: use of artificial intelligence and language models in writing and presenting

9. Scientific Writing and Editing: working with equations, references, and technical language

10. Rhetorical Exercises: practical training in presentation, argumentation, and voice work

11.–13. Current Topics: selected according to student interests and current developments in science and communication

Learning outcomes -

After completing the course, students will be able to:

• Prepare and deliver a professional scientific presentation with appropriate visual aids (e.g., PowerPoint).

• Create a scientific poster and effectively present its content according to the principles of academic communication.

• Independently develop and deliver a short oral presentation on a selected scientific topic, tailored to the target audience.

• Write a structured CV and a motivation letter for academic or professional purposes.

• Understand the basic principles of scientific communication aimed at both expert and non-expert audiences.

• Apply key elements of effective written and oral communication, including the use of modern tools (e.g., AI) in scientific writing.

• Provide constructive peer feedback and critically reflect on their own performance.

• Be better prepared for writing a bachelor’s thesis and for participation in professional events such as the Student Scientific Conference.

Entry requirements -

• Basic familiarity with scientific literature in both Czech and English

• Ability to work with standard text and presentation software (e.g., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint)
