In the course, students will learn about the different groups of pathogens, their most important representatives and the diseases caused by them. They will also learn the principles of prevention (vaccination) and treatment (antibiotics, antifungals, antiparasitics and antivirals) of infectious diseases. Attention will also be paid to the development of resistance. In selected cases, the basic principles and mechanisms of the life cycle of microorganisms will be described. Students will also be introduced to clinical microbiology laboratory methods.
Aim of the course -
Last update: Častorálová Markéta Ing. Ph.D. (15.09.2023)

Students will:

  • be able to characterize the most important causative agents of bacterial, yeast/fungal, viral and parasitic diseases
  • be able to assess the significance of individual pathogens in terms of clinical microbiology
  • know the effects of pathogenicity factors
  • know the mechanisms of action of antimicrobial agents and mechanisms of resistance
  • know the mechanisms involved in the prevention of microbial diseases (vaccination)
