The aim of this course is to deepen theoretical knowledge of general microbiology and expand the knowledge toward clinical microbiology, the etiology of infectious diseases, infectious diseases complications and real epidemiological situations. Moreover, the purpose of the seminar is also to identify bacteria in biological materials and distinguish original infectious agents from mere colonization or normal microbiome. The course should teach students how to evaluate the severity of findings of certain pathogenic bacteria, and how to determine patient's diagnosis and treatment. Students will get a complete picture of microbiological diagnosis, which is a basic tool for the evaluation of antimicrobial therapy.

Students will be able to:

  • understand the environment and setup of the clinical microbiology lab,
  • identify the most important selected representatives of human pathogenic and facultative pathogenic microorganisms by several diagnostic methods,
  • use the acquired knowledge for practical work as experts in clinical microbiology laboratories.
