Annotation -
The course covers the fundamentals of unit operations involving particulate solids (characterisation, agglomeration, comminution, dissolution, powder flow, fluid-solid separation), as well as rate-based separation processes, namely adsorption and crystallization. The concept of population balances is introduced.

Aim of the course -

After completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Perform basic design and analytical calculations related to the covered unit operations
  • Make rational selection of process alternatives and quantify the influence of material properties and process parameters on the process performance
  • Formulate and apply population balances to describe chemical engineering phenomena with a distribution of properties

2. Crystallisation I: phase equilibria, nucleation and growth kinetics, crystalliser types and operation

3. Crystallisation II: population balance of a MSMPR and a batch crystalliser

4. Dissolution, shrinking core and disintegration mechanisms

5. Powder statics and dynamics, force balance in a granular system, powder storage and transport

6. Homogenisation and blending of powders

7. Dispergation of powders in liquids

8. Classification and separation of particles, cyclone, hindered settling

9. Particle breakage, population balance of a mill circuit with recycle

10. Agglomeration, wet granulation, Stokes number analysis, population balance

11. Adsorption I: phase equilibria, mass balance, shock wave propagation
