The course is focused on fundamentals of technical computing in common spreadsheet environment (MS EXcel). Featured techniques include: numerical solution of non-linear equations (e.g. by the Solver tool), numerical solution of systems of linear equations via inverse matrices, experimental data fitting using linear/non-linear functions, numerical integration/derivation.

1. Information systems at ICTP. Basic services of the ICTP computer network: MS Outlook Web Access, VPN, WIFI connectivity. File transfer services, remote desktop connection. STUDENT Educational Info System, CIS, ESO, MOODLE. Information sources at ICTP. E-learning support for distance education at ICTP. Hardware, software (desktop applications, basic file formats), algorithm, computer program, forms of software licensing, common operating systems, computer viruses, data safety, national language support.
2. Creating technical documents using word processors: basic layout of technical documents, formulas and equations, tables.
3. Creating technical documents using spreadsheets: creating formulas and charts, visualization of experimental data - part I.
4. Creating technical documents using spreadsheets: creating formulas and charts, visualization of experimental data - part II.
5. Presentation of results: document publishing, data sharing between applications, PDF, online documents. Preparing a talk - presentations and posters.
6. Application examples - part I.

Efficiently use word processors to create and edit technical and scientific documents. Solve basic scientific and engineering calculations using standard spreadsheet applications.
