This doctoral course deals with a comprehensive overview of theory and principles (physico-chemical processes, transducing mechanisms) of chemical sensors. A special attention is paid to chemiresistors detecting gaseous analytes. There are discussed consequencies amongst: (i) material parameters and morphology of active layer; (ii) characteristics of detected analyte and (iii) character of sensor response. Finally, a detailed overview of measurement methods and measurement instrumentation is provided, including also processing of the sensor output signal. The course also includes work on a specific project, presentation and discussion of its results.

The students will know:

Relations between the physico-chemical parameters of the molecules and their detectability on chemical sensors.

How to propose both composition and morphology of the sensitive layers of chemiresistors so as to obtain sensors optimal for the detection of given analyte.

How to process the electrical output signal of the chemiresitor in dc- and ac- mode of operation.

The course is dedicated to following topics:

1. Input- and output- quantities of chemical sensors; general detection principles.

2. Chemical sensors based on crystal resonators and surface acoustic waves.

3. Chemical sensors based on optical fibres.

4. Specific features of chemiresistors.

5. Relationship between molecular descriptors of detected analytes and transducing mechanisms of chemiresistors I.

6. Relationship between molecular descriptors of detected analytes and transducing mechanisms of chemiresistors II.

7. Influence of morphology and nanostructuring of sensitive layer on chemiresistor parameters.

8. Influence of chemical composition of sensitive layer on chemiresistor parameters.

9. Measurement of chemiresistor responses in dc- and ac- mode (dc- and ac- sensitivity, impedance, Nyquist plots, evaluation of equivalent circuit parameters).

10. Project assignment - measurement and interpretation of impedance spectra of selected chemical sensors.

11. Seminar - presentation of project results, discussion.
