Annotation -
The aim of this subject is to introduced students to the basic principles of microbiology. Further the subject content reacts to the actual problems solved in the field of microbiology. The subject requires the ability to apply the basic characteristics of microorganisms (based on their cytology, morphology, taxonomy, genetics, the growth conditions, reproduction and metabolism) for solving the concrete thematic areas dealing with microorganisms. Simultaneously students will be introduced to the fundamentals of wide spectrum of technique applied in the microbiology research.

Syllabus -

The first part of General microbiology subject is aimed to the fundamental microbiological principles and terms. Contemporaneously it will be mentioned the general importance of microorganisms with regard to their positive and negative effects on the environments and human population. Subsequently they will be discussed a) the function and structure of prokaryotic cells (bacteria and archaebacteria), b) the function and structure of eukaryotic cells (yeasts, filamentous micromycetes), c) the function and structure of viruses. In the scope of the second part students will be introduced to a) the growth conditions of microorganisms (nutrition source, matter transport into a cell, intrinsic and extrinsic factors influencing their growth), b) the application of cultivation methods in microbiology, c) reproduction of microorganisms. The third part involves a) principles of microorganisms examination (classical and modern methods), b) the metabolic diversity of microorganisms and its technological importance. The fourth part is focused on a) the basic principles of microbial genetics and on b) the actual principles of microbial taxonomy.
