Annotation -
Lectures are focused on the history of use, production and processing, structure, nomenclature and properties of selected natural (proteins, polysaccharides, terpenoids), semi-synthetic (cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, galalite) and synthetic polymeric materials. Students will be introduced to the structure and properties of polymeric materials, which can be found in museum and historical collections, as well as polymeric materials used for the restoration and preservation of historical objects and artefacts (adhesives, paints, and consolidation substances).

Aim of the course -

Students will know basic information about:

• the structure and properties of natural and synthetic polymers

• production and processing of synthetic materials

• aging of polymers

• adhesives, paints and consolidation substances

• synthetic polymers that may be present in collections or used in preservation (packaging materials, etc.)

• preservation and storage of polymeric objects
