The lecture includes description of general biological processes on cellular, organ, organism and population level. Introduction to all organism groups from non-cellular viruses through unicellular to multi-cellular organisms. Focus on ecosystem structure and relationships among organisms including chemical communication. Special emphasis is put on the topics related to impact of toxic compounds and environment protection (as stress physiology, immune system, classic and molecular genetics, population growth and evolution of ecosystems). The lecture content is modified for students of non-biological specializations.

Students will be able to:
Describe cell structure and hierarchical organization of biotic components of ecosystem. Principles of classical and molecular genetics, imunology and stress physiology. Classify food chains and other interspecies relationships in ecosystems. Find nomenclature and classification of organisms for practical purposes (e.g. for Bc. or Diploma thesis).

Structure and basic classification of plants, animals and fungi. 10. Hierarchical organization of biological systems - individual, population, community. Population growth. 11. Interspecies relationships (e.g. trophical chains). 12. Bioms and ecosystems - characterization of basic types, evolution of ecosystems. 13. Chemical ecology. Chemical communication. 14.
