Biotechnological processes currently affect many areas of human activity. In this course, students are introduced to the general principles of biotechnologies. Subsequently, the individual elements of the biotechnological process are demonstrated on a model with a microbial producer, including the selection and preparation of raw materials, the preparation of industrial cultivation media, the characterization of industrial strains, the arrangement of the processes and their regulation. A separate section of the course is devoted to processes using plant or animal cells. The general knowledge is complemented by examples of processes of biotechnological production of important compounds and decontamination of the environment. During the seminar, students prepare a project describing an example of biotechnological production.

Students will be able to:

  • explain the principles of the individual groups of biotechnological processes
  • describe the required properties of tools used in the biotechnology industry
  • explain the basic methods of management and control of biotechnological processes
  • describe the technological processes of the production of important compounds (amino acids, vitamins, antibiotics, etc.) and decontamination of the environment
