Chemical and pharmaceutical industry extends the use of biotechnological processes for obtaining new compounds or for reducing costs and environmental impact of the production of current compounds. Introductory lectures will provide detailed information about the current range of implementation of biotechnological processes in these industries. Attention is also given to explain the procedures for development of industrial strains achieving the high production of required compounds and then the specific features of the unit operations up-stream and down-stream processes for different types of biotechnology are discussed. The various types of processes are then discussed using examples of production of particular substances applied in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Special attention is paid to biotransformation processes. In the seminar, students work out individual theme the output of which is the design of a biotechnological process for the production of a selected substance.
