Annotation -
The course will provide students with detailed information regarding the use of instrumental separation (chromatographic) and spectral (UV, FTIR, MS) techniques for the analysis of complex sample matrices. Attention is paid to general aspects of analysis of raw materials, fractions and products with which it is possible to meet in the processing, distrubution and use of fossil and renewable fuels (biofuels). Attention is also paid to the analysis of fuel contaminants in the environment.

Aim of the course -

Students will be able to:

Understand the wide range of separation and spectroscopy methods for chemical analysis of different types of complex hydrocarbon samples.

Propose a rational treatment process and final analysis of real fuel materials, fractions and products.

Identify the major components of complex hydrocarbon samples.

Syllabus -

1. Introduction - classification of analytical methods, qualitative and quantitative analysis.

2. Separation methods in the analysis (distillation, absorption, adsorption, extraction) - instrumentation, sample preparation and actual implementation, evaluation, examples

3. Chromatography - introduction, classification, basic terminology, qualitative and quantitative analysis, application depending on the type of sample.

4. Gas chromatography - columns, detectors and injectors, common configurations, preparation of samples for analysis, GC applications.

5. Liquid chromatography (HPLC, LSC, GPC) - operating conditions, instrumentation, LC detectors, sample preparation, LC applications.

6. UV, fluorimetry - principles, instrumentation, sample preparation, evaluation - quality/quantity, applications.

7. FTIR - principles, instrumentation, sample preparation, evaluation - quality/quantity, applications.

8. MS, NMR - principles, instrumentation, sample preparation, evaluation, applications.

9. Determination of metals and elements (AAS, AES, ICP, X-ray) - principles, advantages/disadvantages, instrumentation, sample preparation, evaluation, applications.

10. Thermal methods (DTA, TGA, DSC, pyrolysis) - principles, advantages/disadvantages, instrumentation, evaluation, applications.

11. Quality assessment of gaseous fuels - an overview of monitored parameters, choice of appropriate procedures for the sampling and analysis.

12. Quality assessment of petroleum fractions and products - an overview of monitored parameters, choice of appropriate analytical procedures.

13. Quality assessment of solid fuels and products of their processing - an overview of the parameters, choice of appropriate procedures for sampling and analysis.

14. Special trace analysis of selected pollutants (PAHs, PCBs, aldehydes, phenols, volatile organic compounds, sulfur-containing substances, organometallic compounds) - sampling, sample preparation, final analysis.
